Divine Guidence

Divine Guidance

Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." (KJV21). The New Living Translation of the Bible says, "When the people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild." (Proverbs 29:18)

What do the following verses have to say about divine guidance?

  1. Proverbs 3:5-6
  2. Luke 9:23-24
  3. Proverbs 8:17
  4. Jeremiah 29:13

Nehemiah received divine guidance

Sometimes we do things simply out of necessity. We see a need and we do what is essential to meet that need.  This seems to be the case with Nehemiah. We do not read where Nehemiah actually saw a vision from God.  He didn't describe any burning bush type experience.  He wasn't knocked off his horse.  He didn't see a giant sheet fall from the sky.  He wasn't taken to the seventh heaven or swallowed by a big fish.  Nehemiah just saw that the walls of Jerusalem were in shambles and asked God to help him rebuild.

On the other hand, Nehemiah did acknowledge God's calling upon his life.  He also recognized the affirmation that had come from those closest to him: "And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me." (Neh. 2:18)

In addition Nehemiah continuously saught God's guidance. Nehemiah's vision and goal was clear. And, because Nehemiah was willing to follow God's divine guidance, he was able to accomplish a monumental task of historical proportions in record time.

In this lesson we will consider the importance of both godly vision and divine guidance.

The people share in Nehemiah's vision

"And they said, 'Let us rise up and build.' So they strengthened their hands for the good work. (Nehemiah 2:18)

Something extra ordinary takes place when a group of people unite under a godly vision.

1. The people responded positively to their leader.

2. The people took responsibility for the work. ("let us rise up...")

3. The people worked together. (Nehemiah 3) The work was divided up by the 10 various gates, each assigned to certain leaders.

A.     The Sheep Gate (3:1-2)
B.     The Fish Gate (3:3-5)
C.     The Old City Gate (3:6-12)
D.     The Valley Gate (3:13)
E.     The Dung Gate (3:14)
F.     The Fountain Gate (3:15-25)
G.     The Water Gate (3:25-27)
H.     The Horse Gate (3:28)
I.     The East Gate (3:29-30)
J.     The Inspection Gate (3:31-32)
(Willmington, H. L.: The Outline Bible)

4. The people worked tirelessly (Nehemiah 4:14)

5. The people organized themselves for the task.

Extrodinary things happen when a group of people are united under a common vision. They do things like win Olympic gold medals. They overturn unjust governments. They overcome disasters.  They list goes on and on.  What's more, when people are united under a godly vision, they stand to accomplish even more.

My friend, Bob Huffaker, would often say to me, "Tell me your dreams, and I will predict your future."

Life Application

John Maxwell tells classic story about a small congregation that had become very complacent. Over the years they had let their church building deteriorate; so much so that the walls and ceiling began to cave in. One Sunday morning a piece of plaster fell from the ceiling and landed directly on the pastor's head. The church leaders met that very same day and began to pray about what they should do. By the end of the week they felt they had heard from God and were ready to announce their new vision for the church. Here is what they announced to the congregation:

  1. As the leaders of this congregation we believe God is telling us it is time to build a new building.
  2. We will tear down the existing church and build in the same location.
  3. We will worship in the current building until construction on the new building is complete.

This is a tragic story about a church that lacked both a godly vision and dvine guidance.   They were going nowhere fast.  What is God's vision for your church?  What is God's vision for your life personally?  Where are you going spiritually?  In what areas do you need to improve?  Like Nehemiah, is God calling you do do something incredible?
